I first drew the outlines with a 2B pencil.

Note that the outline is not a line, but consists of multiple soft stokes that indicate the contour. A hard, pressured outline cannot be easily corrected.

Once the shape is achieved, proportions are measured and features are placed and refined.

At this point it doesn't resemble Dustin Hoffman at all, but I wasn't concerned with that... not yet.
